The Laur of Lynch.

I was watching Blue Velvet (1986) recently and I noticed that Dorothy Vallens had a familiar plant in her apartment.

I knew it as Mother-in-law's tongue as my housemate had bought one for the front room, whilst checking it's identity online I was quite surprised to see that this particular variety with the "creamy yellow leaf margins" has a familiar Lynchian name - LAURENTII.

Interestingly enough Dorothy's twin LAURentii plants are sat atop a radiator in her apartment.

Dorothy hides her knife behind the radiator, it reminded me of the Lady in the radiator in Eraserhead (1977)
The actor who plays this character is LAURel Near.
It then occurred to me that I had seen these LAURentii plants in another Lynch film.
Lost Highway (1997)
Bear in mind that the film begins and ends with the phrase "Dick LAURent is dead."
Lynch claims the phrase was said to him via his intercom, I'm not sure I believe his version of events.
Maybe he is remembering things his own way and not necessarily how they really happened. I say this as I was struck by the similarity of the name Dick Laurent and Dino de Laurentiis.
Which takes us back to Blue Velvet.
And we can add Dune (1984) into the LAUR lore.

So Dune starts with a LAUR, Blue Velvet starts with a LAUR, Lost Highway starts with a LAUR.
I wonder if any other Lynch films begin with a LAUR?

LAURel leaves on the MGM logo for Wild at Heart (1990) starring...

LAURa Dern also appears in Blue Velvet, Inland Empire and Twin Peaks.
Speaking of which, the most obvious LAUR of Lynch.
It is happening again and again and again.
Any other LAUR's at the start of a Lynch film?
You betcha.
Laurens, Iowa. The straight story (1999)

I'll be keeping an eye out for more LAURs in the land of Lynch and adding them here as I find them.
I read that Laurel Canyon intersects Mulholland Drive.

Whilst watching Twin Peaks : The Return ep.6 this evening I spotted these lining Laurentiis at Lucky 7 Insurance.

This one from the original Twin Peaks series just occurred to me whilst watching Rich in Love (1992) starring Piper Laurie and Kyle Maclachlan.
